Map Help Page: Using the Online Map Tool

    Map Window

       

    The map window allows the user to see different information based on the tools and layers selected. Along the sides of the map are PAN buttons. Use these buttons to shift the map in the direction the button is pointing.



    Map Layer List


       

    Notice the Layer Menu on the left-hand side of the page. This menu allows you to change map layer visiblity. Anytime you change the visibility of your layers the map will Refresh itself, so the screen may flicker or jump. Use the check boxes to turn layers on or off.   Certain Layers will ONLY be Veiwable when ZoomED into Map. 



    Tool Box

       
    The Toolbar is located across the top of the map. There are four tool buttons to provide additional functionality when using the viewer.
    1. Original Map  This button refreshes the map to its original view.
    2. View Legend  This button will open a new window with a legend in it. A legend tells you what all of the symbols on a map stand for. For instance, you do not know whether those green lines on the map are railroads, rivers, or roads??? Open the legend to find out!
    3. Print Map  This button pops up a window displaying the print image from your screen. To send the image to the printer select File and Print.
    4. Map Help  This button opens the help window.



      Map Tools

        The Map Tools are located under the map window. There are multiple buttons you may use to help you analyze the map.

      1. Pan North
           
        This button adjusts the map so the user can view the area just North of the viewable area.

      2. Pan South
           
        This button adjusts the map so the user can view the area just South of the viewable area.

      3. Pan West
           
        This button adjusts the map so the user can view the area just West of the viewable area.

      4. Pan East
           
        This button adjusts the map so the user can view the area just East of the viewable area.

      5. Zoom In
           
        This button will zoom in and recenter the map at the point where you click. To use this button click once on the button, and then click once on the map.

      6. Zoom Out
           
        This button will zoom out and recenter the map at the point where you click. To use this button click once on the button, and then click once on the map.

      7. Recenter
           
        This button will recenter the map at the point where you click. It will not zoom in or zoom out. Use it the same way you use the zoom tools.

      8. Identify
           
        Click this button and then click on any symbol found on the map. This will open a map features window, giving you information about things found where you clicked. Keep in mind, if more than one feature are found under your click, then information about multiple features will be displayed.

      9. Find Address
           
        This is the trickiest tool. Use it to locate an address. When you click this tool, a form will open prompting you to type an address. Enter an address and click FIND. The computer will place a marker on the map at the address you entered. Also, if you place a check in the box next to "zoom to address", the map will zoom to the new marker. If you are unable to find an address, try change the street name. Example: 1250 South Freeway to 1250 South.

      10. Clear
           
        This tool clears the address points from the map view once the user is finished using it.
